Radar Image of the Napa Earthquake

john's picture

Recently the science community has developed a new way to image the ground displacement from earthquakes.  It's called  Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry, or InSAR for short.  In fact NASA has recently signed an agreement with the Indian Space Agency to fund the launch of a radar satellite for earthquake and climate studies.

The European Space Agency ESA has had such radar capable satellites for years.  One of these satellites, Sentinel-1, recorded and processed this image of the Napa earthquake.  The earthquake is represented by the butterfly-shaped pattern at upper right.  The San Francisco Bay can also clearly be seen.
