When choosing a place to live or set up a business, consider comparing seismic safety as a factor in your decision. Living in an area with only small and infrequent earthquakes is the most effective way to reduce your risk. Within areas of high seismic activity, avoid sites on sandy or silty soil, downhill of loose soil or rocks, or exposed to open waterfronts. In the event of an earthquake, these conditions can trigger soil liquefaction, landslides, and tsunamis, respectively.
